Salou

Salou, the Capital of the Costa Daurada

Salou was the first municipality in Catalonia to be awarded the title of “Family Holiday Resort” thanks to its 7.5 kilometres of very safe beaches, some of them with children’s playgrounds, entertainment, childminding and a wide range of water sports. Fun activities ranging from catamaran trips to sailing and diving courses are organised by the Water Sports Centre run jointly by the resorts of Salou, Cambrils, Mont-roig/Miami-Platja and Vandellòs/Hospitalet de l’Infant.

Mild, year-round temperatures, safe, well-kept beaches with sands that shelve gently into the Mediterranean and have all the necessary services and facilities, small attractive coves in natural surroundings, a town planning that places great emphasis on green spaces and gardens and wide range of entertainment and leisure activities are just some of the factors that have led Salou to be recognised as the “Capital of the Costa Daurada”.

PLACES OF INTEREST

JAUME I PROMENADE: Salou’s emblematic promenade is more than a kilometre long and runs the length of the Llevant Beach. The monument to King James I was erected in 1965 to commemorate the date in 1229 when the Christian fleet set sail from Salou to conquer the island of Mallorca from the Saracens. It was designed by the architect Ripoll and the sculptor Saumells.

TORRE VELLA: A watchtower built in 1530 to defend Salou from constant pirate and corsair attacks. It is now home to art exhibitions. Address: C/ Arquebisbe Pere de Cardona, 1 Telephone: 977383235

MASIA CATALANA: This relatively modern “farm” was built in 1974 using traditional materials that evoke the countryside. In summer the handicrafts market is held here and at Christmas it the setting for an original live nativity scene and the traditional “caga tió”. Address: Avda. Carles Buïgas, 50

MODERNISM IN SALOU: On a stroll along the Jaume I Promenade you can see some of the early houses built in this architectural style. One of the finest is the Chalet Voramar or Casa Bonet designed by the architect Domènech Sugranyes i Gras, a disciple of the great master Antoni Gaudí.

THE ILLUMINATED FOUNTAIN: Gracing one end of the Jaume I Promenade, during the summer this fountain delights visitors with a spectacular display of water and light. It was designed by the architect Carles Buïgas who was also responsible for Montjuic Fountain in Barcelona.

BEACHES

Salou’s beaches are without a doubt one of its best attractions and great care is taken to maintain them. The resort has eight magnificent large beaches and a number of small coves that are not so easy to get to and therefore less well known. Many of them are surrounded by pine trees and nature, making them enchanting and unforgettable beauty spots. The main beaches are:

PLATJA LLEVANT: At approximately 1,200 m long and 140 m wide, the Llevant Beach is the longest in the resort.

PLATJA PONENT: At approximately 1,100 m long, the Ponent Beach is the second longest in Salou.

PLATJA CAPELLANS: Capellans Beach is 220 metres long and is reached from Brussel·les Street. It has been awarded the Blue Flag.

PLATJA LLARGA: The Llarga Beach is surrounded by pine trees and nature. It is 600 metres long and access is from Replanells Street, along the Salou – Tarragona coastal road.

CALA LLENGUADETS: Cala Llenguadets is a small cove that can only be reached on foot from Torrassa Street. It is 125 metres long and of great beauty as it is surrounded by nature.

CALA PENYA TALLADA: Cala Penya Tallada is a small cove of great natural beauty next to Punta Roja cove. It is 125 metres long and is reached from Penya Tallada Street.

CALA DE LA FONT: Cala Font is 70 metres long and 54 metres wide and is reached from Les Dunes Street. It is bordered by natural rock and its accesses are safe and easy.

CALA CRANCS: Cala Crancs is the easternmost of Salou’s beaches and one of the most attractive. It is 85 metres long and 50 metres wide and is bordered by natural rock.
