The MWC (Mobile World Congress), the largest mobile phone exhibition in the world, has been held in Barcelona for the past nine years. Organised by the GSMA, a worldwide association of mobile operators and associated companies, it was begun with the objective of promoting international cooperation in the GSM mobile telephone system. Manufacturers and operators use the congress to present cutting edge global mobile communications technology – in other words, the latest innovations that will mark the future of the mobile phone industry.
The slogan of the Mobile World Congress 2014 to be held between 24 and 27 February is “Creating What’s Next”. Particular attention will be paid to the so-called “wearables” and the generalisation of 4G services which, according to forecasts, will reach one million subscribers in 2017.
Keynote speakers at the congress will include the top executives from IBM, Facebook and WhatsApp. Facebook president Mark Zuckerberg will give the inaugural address.
The new Fira de Barcelona on the Gran Vía, inaugurated in 2013, is the venue for this ninth edition. It will have an exhibition space of more than 98,000 square metres with 1,800 exhibitors, 240 speakers and 48 topic-focused conference sessions. More than 75,000 attendees are expected at the congress, mainly from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, South Korea and Spain, with official delegations from 145 countries.
New for the MWC 2014 is the international 4 Years from Now meeting to be held at the traditional Fira de Barcelona venue at Montjuic. This event will be devoted to mobile communications entrepreneurs. The format will be more modest than the MWC, with four conference days to which all those entrepreneurs with ambitious projects will be invited.
The GSMA has chosen Barcelona to organise the World Mobile Capital until 2018. The event generates a financial impact of some 3.5 billion euros for the area during this period.
Neither can we forget that the mobile phone industry sets trends for the whole world. Far from being a mere fashion trend, it is becoming more consolidated every year and is even helping to change our perception of the world.
